If all these blog posts here at Volvo of Burlingame are any indication, our favorite automaker does not mess around when it comes to the safety of their new and used cars. Doesn't matter if you're behind the wheel or walking down the street, because when Volvo says they'll have a crash-free lineup by 2020, they mean to make good on their promise. In fact, they're so devoted their mission that even their pranks revolve around safety.
If you happened to go anywhere on the internet last week, you were probably reminded that it was April Fools' Day at some point. As much as we love pranking people in the real world on April 1 each year, our efforts pale in comparison to the tomfoolery that goes down across the internet. Granted, not everyone out there takes part, but since it's always nice when the big dogs take part, the brass at Volvo took to the drawing board.
So when last Monday rolled around, they unveiled the future of automotive safety: the External Vehicle Protection (EnVeloP) system. You know how airbags deploy inside a car when someone gets in an accident? Well while that's all and good for the vehicle's occupants, what about the safety of those outside the car? In an effort to put this age-old quandary to rest, EnVeloP will deploy a full-vehicle external airbag from the roof, completely encasing the car if it detects an imminent crash or collision. Not only that, but it's so darn effective that the system will even activate when the vehicle comes in contact with water.
Yes, it does look as silly as it sounds, but even as a mere joke, we can't help but feel like this is a sign of things to come. Hey, you never know.
But until that day comes, feel free to learn more about all the cutting-edge safety features on our lineup from the experts in our parts department here at 900 Peninsula Avenue in Burlingame, CA 94010. It's the future today, folks.
